Prescription of Kampo products<\/h3>\n

When you hear the words \u201cKampo product,\u201d you may have an image that one Kampo
\nproduct is made from one raw material, but in fact, this is not necessarily true. For
\nexample, when you have a cold, you may take \u201cKakkontou,\u201d but this medicine is not made
\nfrom a raw material called \u201cKakkon.\u201d It is made from a combination of seven crude
\nmedicines: pueraria root, ephedra herb, cinnamomum twig, peony root, ginger, jujube, and
\nglycyrrhiza.
Many Kampo products are
\nmade from a combination
\nof multiple crude medicines, and these combinations are called Kampo prescriptions. There are more than 200 varieties of Kampo prescriptions approved in Japan , and people can choose a prescription depending on their symptoms.<\/p>\n

Kampo products which are in fact very familiar<\/h3>\n

Among the medicines you normally purchase at pharmacies, etc., there are many medicines
\ncontaining Kampo prescriptions.
\nFor example, the prescription of \u201cBofutsushosan\u201d is used for obesity and constipation
\nand is effective in improving these conditions. The name \u201cBofutsushosan\u201d is not
\nindicated in a conspicuous place on the package of the medicine, but it may be contained in
\nthe medicine itself.<\/p>\n

Why \u201cKampo products\u201d now?<\/h2>\n

When people hear the word, \u201cKampo,\u201d many of them may have assumptions such as \u201cold
\nmedicines\u201d and \u201cit takes a long time to see the effects,\u201d but these are not necessarily true.
\nCurrently, a combination of Western medicine and Kampo medicine has been able to
\nimprove diseases which had been thought to be difficult to heal, and there are
\nfast-acting Kampo products exhibiting their effects as soon as five minutes after taking
\nthem. In addition, Kampo has a unique concept called \u201cSho,\u201d which leads to
\nprescriptions depending on the condition of each person\u2019s body. Kampo treats \u201cpeople\u201d
\nrather than \u201cdiseases,\u201d and there are diseases that respond only to Kampo. That\u2019s why
\ninterest in \u201cKampo\u201d is on the rise.<\/p>\n

Diseases in elderly people<\/h3>\n

\"\"Diseases in elderly people tend to trigger \u201cmulti-organ diseases\u201d which decrease the
\nfunctions of multiple organs. Therefore, for the treatment for elderly people, it is
\nimportant to not just stick to one set of symptoms, but also see the condition of the
\nentire body. Those who have multiple diseases need a medicine for each disease, and have to
\nbe careful with the onset of adverse reactions. Kampo products are useful for such cases.
\nThey contain various crude medicine ingredients, and if they are suitable for the patient\u2019s
\ncondition, the number of the medicines he\/she must take can be greatly reduced. For
\nexample, Tokishakuyakusan is often prescribed for irregular menstruation, menopausal
\ndisorder, and bad conditions before and after delivery and contains a total of six crude
\nmedicines: Japanese angelica and cnidium rhizome for smoother blood flow, peony root for
\npain relief, and poria sclerotium, atractylodes rhizome, and alisma rhizome for water
\nvolume adjustment. In this way, Kampo products contain natural products with various effects and can comprehensively work on the entire body, resulting in improving the
\n\u201cnatural healing power\u201d that the body originally has and reducing the burden on the
\npatient by decreasing the number of medicines the patient has to take.<\/p>\n

Menopause symptoms (women)<\/h3>\n

\"\"The climacteric period for women is about 10 years, about five years each before and
\nafter menopause, and changes in the body\u2019s condition and other bad conditions observed
\nduring this period are called \u201cmenopause symptoms,\u201d which occur in women around age
\n50.
\nThe main cause of these symptoms is said to be a decrease in female hormone, but the
\nsymptoms vary depending on the individual and include bad conditions such as chills
\nand hot flushes, excessive sweating, palpitation, obesity, insomnia, and frustration. For
\nsuch symptoms, Western medical treatments supplement the deficient amount of
\nfemale hormone, and tranquilizers and sleeping pills are usually prescribed. In Kampo
\nmedicine treatments, medicines are prescribed after checking the patient\u2019s condition
\ncomprehensively instead of prescribing one medicine for one symptom. Based on a detailed
\nand accurate examination by checking the patient\u2019s complexion, skin condition, the way
\nthe patient speaks, tone of voice, pulse strength, and abdominal distention, medicines
\nsuitable for the patient are prescribed. For example, if the patient has relatively
\nsufficient physical strength with severe hot flushes, Keishibukuryogan is usually prescribed, if constipation and frustration before menstruation are observed,
\nTokakujyokito, and if sensitivity to cold, dizziness, and heavy-headedness are observed,
\nTokishakuyakusan. However, the details and severity of the menopause symptoms vary,
\nand the causes that worsen the symptoms depends on the person. Therefore, people are
\nnow interested in \u201cKampo\u201d which is prescribed considering these factors as well.<\/p>\n

\n

Disease for which Western treatments have not been clearly established<\/h3>\n

Cramp in the calf<\/h4>\n

Cramp in the calf is a general term for a muscle spasm with strong pain that occurs in
\nthe calf, which is one of the ailments Kampo products are effective against. The causes
\nof the muscle spasm include excessive muscle fatigue, a deficit of water and minerals,
\nand neurological abnormalities. It acutely develops especially after hard exercise or
\nduring sleep, and even after it settles down, you may still have a sense of discomfort or a
\nhabit of spasm. The muscle spasm is likely to develop in the calf, but similar symptoms
\nare sometimes observed in the fingers, shoulders, and neck. A Kampo product often
\nprescribed for such symptoms is Shakuyakukanzoto. It is a simple prescription
\ncomprising of two crude medicines, peony root and glycyrrhiza, but is fast-acting and
\nresolves the spasm within as early as five minutes. It is said that there is no Western
\nmedicine as effective as this medicine for cramps.
\nMany people misrecognize Kampo products by assuming they are not fast-acting and it
\nthat takes a long time to see their effects, but as shown in this example, many Kampo
\nproducts are fast-acting and sometimes more effective compared with Western
\ntreatments (treatments using new synthetic medicines).<\/p>\n

Atopic dermatitis<\/h4>\n

Atopic dermatitis is an allergic disease. Eczema with itchiness repeatedly improves and
\nworsens, and it is quite difficult to recover completely. Atopic dermatitis is mainly
\ncategorized into moist and dry types, and its causes vary from psychological stress and
\nbad eating habits to house dust. As a Western treatment, antihistamines to suppress
\nallergies and the application of steroids to relieve inflammation are the main treatment
\nmethods. Steroids may be useful to relieve local inflammation, but adverse reactions
\ndue to the long-term use of the medicine or rebound reactions due to abrupt discontinuation
\nmay occur. Kampo products are useful for this disease. If the lesion is moist with
\nredness, Ohrengedokuto and Shofusan can be prescribed for a moist lesion with redness.
\nIf severe suppuration is observed, Jumihaidokuto can be prescribed. If the skin is dry,
\nUnseiin or Keigairengyoto can be prescribed. Kampo products can be prescribed
\ndepending on the patient\u2019s overall condition, and the patient can alleviate tough
\nsymptoms and stress and receive a treatment that makes the disease less likely to
\nrecur.<\/p>\n

Diabetes mellitus<\/h4>\n

Diabetes mellitus has two types: type 1 which is caused by the collapse of beta cells in
\nthe pancreas and type 2 which is caused by bad lifestyle habits or obesity. What is
\nfrightening about this disease is if it advances, many complications such as numbness,
\nswelling, pain, frequent urination, difficulty urinating, and dry mouth develop, possibly
\ncausing other serious diseases. Therefore, it is sometimes difficult to treat with only
\nWestern therapies. Kampo is useful for such a case. Hachimijiogan or Goshajinkigan for
\nnumbness and Byakkokaninjinto or Bakumondoto for dry mouth can be prescribed
\ndepending on the person\u2019s overall condition. It may be difficult to control blood pressure
\nwith only Kampo, but they are excellent medicines to favorably maintain the patient\u2019s
